From 21st-25th September 2026 the British Woodworking Federations'f Fire Door Safety Week is raising awareness of the ciritical role fire doors play in protecting people and property.

Fire doors are an important part of a building's fire strategy, but their ability to perform as intended depends on a number of factors: from correct specification and installation through to inspection, maintenance and everyday use.

The 2026 campaign highlights research showing that there are still significant gaps in public understanding of fire doors.
A fire door isn't simply a standard door. It is designed and tested to provide a specific level of fire resistance, helping to restrict the spread of fire and smoke and providing valuable time for people to escape and for emergency services to respond.
The 5 Step Fire Door Check
Fire Door Safety Week provides a straightforward 5 Step Fire Door Check to help people identify potential problems with fire doors.
Certification
Look for a certification label or plug on the door, notmally found on the top or occassionally on the side. Certification provides an indication that the door is a genuine fire door and has been appropriately tested or certified.
Apertures
Check that any apertures or openings within the door are appropriate and have not been incorrectly altered. Changes to a fire door can affect its performance, which is why modifications should be properly assessed and carried out by competent professionals.
Gaps and Seals
Look at the gaps around the door and check that the intumescent and smoke seals are present and in good condition. The Fire Door Safety Week guidence states that gaps around the top and sides should be consistently less than 4mm when the door is closed, while the gap underneath can be larger depending on the door. Damaged, missing or incorrectly fitted seals can affect the door's ability to perform during a fire.
Closers
Check that the door closer is present and functioning correctly. A fire door needs to close properly in order to perform its intended function. Any issues with the closer should be reported and addressed appopriately.
Operation
Finally, check that the door closes firmly onto the latch without sticking on to the floor or frame.
The campaign's message is particularly clear on this point:
A fire door only works when it is clsoed.
